Another 2018 review for you all today, but today it’s all about family shoots!

I’ve really come to love family shoots over the past few years, and I’m lucky enough to sometimes shoot the same families again and again which feels all kinds of wonderful. Sometimes it happens where I’ve shot a couples’ wedding and they go on to start a family, and I can be there to document the next chapter too!

In 2018 I had a busy few months at the beginning of the year shooting families; most shoots were at home, which is something I really love. Having little ones of my own means that I know all about how a home changes when little ones come along - there’s a special kind of family chaos (don’t worry about tidying up for me - it’s all part of the story!) and it’s a constantly changing thing, which is why I love to document everything exactly as it is.

There were also shoots out and about where we let the kids direct where we wandered to, what we played with and followed them as they ran around, being themselves. I always suggest either being at home or somewhere that little ones are familliar with, or somewhere that there’s loads for them to do. I want to see them completely acting like they usually would - there’s very little “stand here and look this way”.. well, maybe one for a mantlepiece, but it’s really not what these shoots are about.

What makes me tick with family shoots is the relationships between you all, little family in-jokes, the mess of family life.. I love the reality of everything so much more than anything stiff or posed - it’s exactly how I approach weddings too. I want to see the joy and beauty of the reality. Last year I captured everything from a baby April at two weeks old, to Roy and Muriel who were celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary.. Absolutely wonderful stuff.

So! Here is my round-up for 2018, with all the laughs, tickles, quiet moments, little touches, cuddles, kisses, playing and exploring that makes up the story behind each and every family.. When I look through I see so much joy and abandon, and just so much love. There’s never a right time to have a family shoot, each stage is magical and everything changes so quickly!
